Glass Fibre Wrapping India
Scroll
Introduction
When concrete loses its capacity or design strength due to corrosion, the go-to solution to regain & restore this strength is to add glass fibre wrapping. Corrosion can be an aspect caused due changes in the usage of the structure or demand for change in design to adhere to the new load-carrying capacity thrust upon it. Glass fibre wrapping is a helpful process for the rehabilitation and retrofitting of structures and structural strengthening of its members. This technique is relatively cheaper and is marginally less brittle than carbon fibre when used in structural composites.
Glass Fibre, with multiple layers, becomes ductile & helps in strengthening. It especially works well against seismic activity where the Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) wrap acts as a shield. Due to its lightweight quality, it is available at any required length. Glass FRP wrapped concrete columns have the power to resist any type of chemical or other weathering factors.
Problem / What is at stake?
Corrosion in concrete structures due to ageing, poor protection necessitates advancing the deteriorated structure. Glass fibre wrapping is an easy method to install, adjust and fit on any existing components in a way that ensure an increase in flexural & shear strength of structural members, hence causing no disturbance to other structural members like columns, beams, walls, floor decking, and roof decking to become highly adaptable to concrete. It is a new material consisting of narrowly spaced glass and resins which is very valuable in empowering strength.
