Introduction

Corrosion Mitigation for Civil Structures – SSPIPL is India’s leading corrosion prevention specialist with expertise in Cathodic Protection (CP) and all other aspects of corrosion engineering. SSPIPL has rich experience & expertise in corrosion control and prevention. SSPIPL has undertaken Corrosion and Cathodic Protection projects on a range of structures in some of India’s harshest and most highly corrosive environments.

From jetties and major wharves, to offshore facilities and reinforced concrete tanks, bridges and steel structures, our team have the experience to assist you.

Problem / What is at stake?

Infrastructural development, especially civil engineering works, plays a pivotal role in the economic growth of a Nation, wherein critical and major structures like bridges, tunnels, dams, flyovers, and power plants are constructed with service life of 75 to 100 years.

Concrete is the lifeline of a country’s civil infrastructure whereas steel (rebar) is the backbone of concrete. Our infrastructural projects face numerous challenges related to long coastal belts and exposure to harsh marine environment conditions which affect the rebars. Pollutants such as chloride, CO2, sulphates, moisture, and oxygen present in the marine environment/seawater deteriorate the structures and severely reduce their service life by 10 to 15 years.

India loses around 3 – 4% GDP every year as a cost of corrosion towards replacement/rehabilitation of such structures. To protect them and enhance their shelf lives, suitable technologies should be deployed during the construction stage itself.

Corrosion is a key contributor to the deteriorating infrastructure of the country. Experts estimate that the total cost of corrosion in India today is around $70 billion (roughly Rs 5 lakh crore) a year, or roughly 3-4 per cent of our GDP.

A combination of the porous nature of concrete and a weak cover leads to diffusion of detrimental materials like water, CO2, chlorides and SO2 into concrete, leading to loss of passivity and corrosion of the reinforcement steel and ultimately deterioration of the concrete.

Common methods for corrosion protection of reinforced concrete structures are:

  • use of corrosion-resistant steel (CRS) rebar
  • Application of protective coating to steel
  • Application of protective coating to concrete surface and
  • Addition of inhibitor admixture to concrete.

However there are very limited methods of protecting already built structures : Cathodic Protection
